The origional 1933 version of King Kong was a pleasant surprise considering I had only seen the Peter Jackson version released a few years back - which I didnt really give much thought to at all. I remember being slightly amused at the special effects.. before forgetting that I had ever entered the cinema the next day. It had no impact on me whatsoever.
The origional however was much more exciting and I was constantly entertained. I remember cringing and squirming when poor little people were being crshed by the giant hairy gorrilla. My favorite disgustingly awesome moment was when Kong tore the dinosaurs jaw apart. 'CRUNCH' - and the whole of dftv1 were screaming as much as an audience in the 1930's!
I think the fact that we, the silly-3d-specs generation, were still intregued by a classic film with effects as unsophisticated a King Kongs's proves that it dosn't matter how shiny and in your face a film looks, as long as the story can entertain people for generations without being forgotton.

I'm pretty sure that if you edited the Peter Jackson version down to something closer to the 1933 one, you could get all the goodness of the effects (which were spectacular!) with the pace of the story.
