'The Truman Show' is about Truman, played by Jim Carrey, who has lived his whole life within an artificial environment for the purpose of a popular reality TV show starring.. well him. It is not until he is older that he begins to realise that there is something peculiar about the world he lives in.
I'm not usually a fan of Jim Carrey as I find him slightly irritating, however, his animated performance make the film extremely funny.
There were moments of in the film which I found very clever as well as entertaining, such as the not-so-subtle advertisments by his wife and his best friend. I also liked when we see him sail to the end of his 'world', where he physically breaks through the clouds and into the wall of the studio.
The film had the right balance of humour and seriousness, as despite its many funny moments, it got me thinking about the worlds obsession with reality TV. I have grown up in a generation of Big Brother, and also if you think about it, I know a rediculous amount of rubbish about people I have never even met or care about (take for instance Katie Price), and its all because of the media. 'The Truman Show' may be exaggerated and a little far-fetched, but I think it's still a reflection of societys need to follow other peoples lifes through the television. It's scary isn't it? It also go me questioning whether my whole life has been a lie and that someone is currently making a reality show about me.. but then I realised that would be a really vein thing to think.
In the end we never see exactly how Truman survives in the real world. I think this was for the best, as the point was that he went againsed 'the voice in the sky' telling him to stay in the safe, false world he has always known. He instead ventures into the unknown. I think it was this message that made the film so memorable for me.
