The Wizard of Oz

We were asked to blog about one of the films we have watched in class...

The only time I had ever watched this before was when I was a kid. I remember enjoying it and, of course, I couldnt forget the storyline because it's so iconic, however I was quite dissapointed when I saw it aged 18. I guess it didnt quite have the same magic as when I was 6 years old. Oh well.

I could picture an audience being amazed when Dorothy's world magically turns from black and white into colour. Films in colour were still very new and I'm sure the change had a great effect back then, however, having grown up in a time where ALL films are in colour, it was hard for me to be so impressed.

I found it quite cringey to listen to all the songs. I'm sure everyone is familiar with the music even if they haven't seen the film. They are so overused that they have become so far removed from the the film itself, so I guess it was actually quite nice to hear them in their origional form.

What really surprised me when I watched The Wizard of Oz second time around was just how creepy the munchkins were. It wasn't the fact that they were so small, I have no problem with that, it's just there was something strange about their faces. Something to do with all the make-up they were wearing making them look like 100 year old children. I was much more scared of them now than I was back when I was 6. I also thought very differently about the witch. Having seen Wicked in London (and hating it, but thats not the point) I couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor wicked witch of the west. I like evil characters more.

Overall I really did appreciate The Wizard of Oz for what it was: a great story with a scense of adventure and fun which still captures audiences of all ages to this day.

  1. I like evil characters too... they're often so much cooler than the goodies, sadly!
