For my dads birthday he was given a box set of old sci-fi/horror movies so I thought I'd start off with this one, I thought it was great!
It was made in the 1950's so there would be some obvious differences from current films of this genre, other than the fact that it's in black and white. I thought the pace of the film was much slower than that of a more recent film - he didn't actually shrink until about half way through! We were talking about this in class and how films made at this time had no need to be so fast paced as the audience paid more attention to the film because it was more of a novelty to be at the cinema.
Another thing is that the graphics are not as realistic as films made nowadays, however I don't see this as a negative or off-putting thing as I appreciate that the film was high-tech for it's time. I could picture an audience in the 50's at the cinema being absolutely terrified when faced with a gigantic cat or having to wrestle a spider-monster for some stale cake. When I wached it recently I was not so terrified. However, I would hate if someone re-made The Incredible Shrinking Man with huge explosions and impressive graphics as I think it should be remembered in it's origional, more charming, low-tech form.
There comes a point where your 3 inches tall and have just wrestled a giant cat/spider when you wonder: how is this film going to end exactly?
Well this answer is, it doesn't really!
It ends with the tiny Scott looking up at the sky and seeing himself as equal to everyone dispite his size, as seemingly we are all just atoms in the universe. Aka he dosn't get squished. Which I secretly kind of wanted to see happen..
